The Straight Story (1999)

As of today, I have now seen all of David Lynch’s feature films, and what an amazing film The Straight Story is. The title of this movie — which is actually named for the real life Alvin Straight, who made a six-week lawn mower powered journey to visit his ailing brother — could also be taken as indicative of the filming style in the context of David Lynch, as this is not a movie one could categorize as Lynchian, as it is more traditional, yet extremely moving and well-done.

The acting is also phenomenal, especially from Richard Farnsworth as Alvin. Sissy Spacek appears as Alvin’s daughter, and Everett McGill as a lawn mower salesman. Harry Dean Stanton appears briefly at the end as Alvin’s brother Lyle.
